Métal Qui Chante is an association formed
in July 2001 by a dozen or so people who were keenly interested
in and passionate about Steel Band Caribbean music. Loïc
Coulombel, the then president of the association, together
with the band leader José Jorquera, a professional
musician, decided to channel this interest into the formation of
a local Steel Band – the Chenapans Orchestra.
There followed many months of training, initially
every Wednesday evening in the Salle de Fète at Fontes, but
now re-located to the Salle de Reunion in Roujan. After some time
members of the band felt ready to start giving live performance
at local fètes and carnivals. There were plenty of opportunities
to play as there are are many such events in this part of the south
of France.
The band has grown since it was formed and has
gone from strength to strength, giving more and more performances
both in the region of Hérault and beyond.
The band
is located in the Languedoc region of the sunny south of France,
shown in the square below. Originally based in Fontes, the band
relocated to the Salle de Reunion, Roujan, in 2003.
